Summary
Jonathan Causey is a senior litigation attorney at Causey & Ye Law. He has a unique background for a Midwest litigation attorney. He originally hails from Memphis, Tennessee. In 2004, he received his BBA in banking and finance with a minor in economics from Mississippi State University. After undergrad, Jon immediately opened an insurance agency where he managed a staff and assisted over 1000 clients with their insurance needs and financial planning. He held insurance licenses in Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi. In addition, he earned his Series 6 and 63 securities licenses. In May of 2014, he received his Juris Doctorate with Honors from Mississippi College School of Law.
In his legal practice, Jon has won millions of dollars in civil judgments and defeated various governments at criminal trials. In 2016, on behalf of Causey & Ye Law, Jon received the International Community Leadership Award from the Iowa Secretary of State. In 2017, Jon was recognized as the "National Academy of Criminal Defense Attorneys Top 10 under 40" for his excellence in the field of Criminal Law. During that same year, on behalf of Causey & Ye Law, Jon received the inaugural US-China Business Leadership Award from the Iowa-China Council. The U.S. Ambassador to China and Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds presented the award.
The following are just a few highlights of Jon’s diligent advocacy for his clients
- Jon was the lead trial attorney for a civil case in Johnson County involving EB-5 immigrant investment visas, fraudulent misrepresentation, conspiracy, and aiding and abetting. The jury awarded Jon’s client $140,000.00 in compensatory damages and $400,000.00 in punitive damages.
- Represented an individual who was struck by a dump truck and got $1.35 million for his client.
- Jon forced a settlement in a complex wrongful death and personal injury case in Minnesota that dealt with a rideshare accident. This was a case of first impression in Minnesota. Jon also won a default judgment for over $7 million for the same clients and transcribed the judgment to China for collection.
- Jon won his client a substantial payout in an civil assault case. Jon found within hundreds of pages of medical records where the Defendant had admitted he acted out of aggression. This defeated the Defendant’s claim of self-defense.
- Jon and Causey & Ye's other managing partner, Yangyidi Ye, secured full policy limits as a settlement for 4 international clients injured in a serious and complicated car accident case that occurred in Yellowstone National Park.
- Jon won a summary judgment of $460,000.00 against a Mid-west steel company for a company client from China.
- Jon won summary judgment in Minnesota federal court against an insurance company that brought a products liability case against Jon's business client who sold the product through Amazon.
- Jon represented a multi-million dollar ag-tech company in Iowa federal court against a billion-dollar Fortune 500 Company.
- Jon recovered $500,000 for a Minnesota company from a Washington state company where there was a dispute over a wire transfer.
- Jon was able to vacate an Iowa custody order by insisting that a first-in-time Chinese custody order was enforceable pursuant to Iowa's Uniform Child-Custody Jurisdiction and Enforcement Act.
- Jon got 14 Counts of Embezzlement dismissed when he proved the accusers had lied and manipulated their taxes to frame his client.
- Jon convinced a federal criminal jury to acquit his client who was charged with felon in possession of a firearm in which the feds tried to pin a gang shooting on Jon's client.
- Jon successfully defended five clients who were charged by the State of Iowa in connection to a Mid Iowa Narcotics Enforcement (MINE) Drug Task Force investigation.
- Jon got over a dozen cases dismissed that were part of a human trafficking investigation by the MINE Task Force. Then, Jon got all of his clients' seized property and money returned, including unfreezing several bank accounts.
- Jon has defended many cases of Human Trafficking and Receiving Profits from Prostitution cases in Minnesota. Many of these cases likewise dealt with government seizure of clients' property. In one case, Jon gained a court order for the authorities to return over $100,000 in cash seized from his client from multiple locations at different times.
- Jon defended a client from Boston charged in Minnesota with profiting from prostitution. The case spanned several US States. Jon got the client released from custody and given probation.
- Jon defended a client accused of child abuse resulting in injury, which carried a 10-year prison sentence. The client claimed he had done nothing wrong, and Jon stood by his side. There would be no plea deal. In the end, the State was forced to dismiss this felony charge against Jon’s client.
- Jon has won asylum cases in both the Omaha, NE and Fort Snelling, MN Immigration Courts.
- Jon has secured millions in divorce marital property distributions for his clients in both Minnesota and Iowa. These cases often involve parties in different countries with international assets.
